Band Assisted Pull-Up

The Band Assisted Pull-Up uses an anchored resistance band to offset part of your body weight. The lats perform most of the pulling work, while the middle back, forearms, and abdominals help support the movement. Different band strengths allow the amount of assistance to be adjusted.

Training context

Why is the Band Assisted Pull-Up useful?

The band can help bridge the gap between other pulling exercises and an unassisted pull-up. It allows you to practice hanging from the bar, driving the elbows down, and moving through a full pull-up path.

Choose a band that provides enough help for controlled repetitions without launching you through the easiest part of the movement. A thicker band is not always better if it makes the top position difficult to control.

Technique overview

Secure the band before pulling

Loop the band firmly around the pull-up bar and place one bent knee securely into it. Begin from a steady hang, pull the elbows down toward your sides, and raise your chest toward the bar without swinging. Pause at your controlled top position, then lower slowly. Stop if the band shifts or the supported knee begins to slip.

Treat this as an overview and use a range, pace, and setup you can control.
