Exercise guide

Barbell Curl

The Barbell Curl is a standing arm exercise that trains both biceps at the same time. The forearms help hold and control the bar while the elbows bend. Since both hands share one bar, the movement is easy to load but offers less independent movement than dumbbell curls.

Training context

What makes the Barbell Curl different?

A barbell connects both hands to the same load, which creates a stable and repeatable curling path. It is often possible to use more total resistance than with a one-arm curl.

The fixed hand position may feel different depending on wrist and elbow comfort. Use a grip width that allows the bar to move without forcing the wrists into an uncomfortable angle.

Technique overview

Keep the elbows close to the torso

Stand tall with an underhand grip and the bar resting near the thighs. Curl by bending the elbows while keeping the upper arms close to your sides. Pause briefly near the top and lower until the arms are extended without forcing the elbows. Avoid leaning backward or driving the hips forward to start the repetition.

Treat this as an overview and use a range, pace, and setup you can control.
