Exercise guide

Alternating Kettlebell Row

The Alternating Kettlebell Row is a bent-over back exercise performed with two kettlebells. One bell rows toward the torso while the other remains near the floor, then the sides alternate. The middle back and lats drive the pull while the biceps assist at the elbow.

Training context

Muscles worked by the Alternating Kettlebell Row

The muscles of the middle back and lats pull the kettlebell toward the ribs and help move the shoulder blade. The biceps assist by bending the elbow, while the hips, legs, and trunk hold the bent-over position.

Since the torso is unsupported, the weight should be light enough that you can maintain the same hip hinge as the arms alternate. Standing more upright as the set continues changes the exercise and shortens the pull.

Technique overview

Keep the torso still while you row

Hinge at the hips with your knees slightly bent and hold both kettlebells beneath the shoulders. Pull one bell toward your ribs by driving the elbow back, then lower it under control before rowing the other side. Keep your back steady, avoid twisting the shoulders, and stop when you can no longer maintain the bent-over position.

Treat this as an overview and use a range, pace, and setup you can control.
