Exercise guide

Backward Drag

The Backward Drag is a sled exercise performed by walking backward while holding ropes or straps. The quadriceps work continuously to extend the knees and move the sled, while the calves, glutes, hamstrings, grip, and lower back provide support. The exercise can be loaded for strength, conditioning, or lower-body volume.

Training context

Keeping the Backward Drag controlled

The sled should remain under steady tension rather than repeatedly stopping and jerking forward. Short, consistent steps usually make it easier to keep the load moving while maintaining balance.

Choose a clear route before beginning because you will be traveling backward. The load should be heavy enough to challenge the legs without forcing you to stumble, twist, or pull mostly with the arms.

Technique overview

Use short, steady steps

Attach the straps securely, face the sled, and walk backward until the lines are tight. Lean away slightly and use short steps to drive through the legs while keeping the chest up. Check the path behind you and maintain tension until the planned distance is complete. Slow down before releasing the straps so the sled does not pull you off balance.

Treat this as an overview and use a range, pace, and setup you can control.
