Barbell Hack Squat
The Barbell Hack Squat is a free-weight squat variation in which the bar is held behind the legs. The quadriceps perform most of the lower-body work, while the hamstrings and calves assist. Grip strength can also become a limiting factor because the bar remains in the hands throughout the set.
Training context
Using the Barbell Hack Squat in a workout
This variation can be used as an alternative squat pattern or as additional quadriceps work. It requires more coordination and grip than a hack squat machine, so it is not simply a machine movement performed with a barbell.
Plate size affects how low the bar can travel. Smaller plates may allow more range, while larger plates can contact the floor earlier.
Technique overview
Keep the bar close behind the legs
Stand with the bar held behind your thighs and your feet in a stable stance. Bend the hips and knees while keeping the bar close to the back of the legs. Descend only as far as you can maintain balance and grip, then drive through the feet to stand. Avoid letting the bar pull the shoulders backward or turning the movement into a stiff-legged lift.
Treat this as an overview and use a range, pace, and setup you can control.
