Barbell Lunge
The Barbell Lunge is a lower-body exercise performed with a bar across the upper back. The quadriceps, glutes, and hamstrings work together as one leg steps forward, lowers the body, and pushes back to standing. The calves and trunk help maintain balance beneath the bar.
Training context
Why is the Barbell Lunge useful?
Each leg must produce and control force within a split stance, making the lunge useful for unilateral lower-body training. The barbell also allows the exercise to be loaded in small, measurable increments.
The correct step length depends on your proportions and preferred movement. The front knee may move forward naturally, but the foot should remain planted and the position should feel controlled rather than unstable.
Technique overview
Step into a balanced position
Unrack the bar and establish your balance before stepping. Take a controlled step forward and lower by bending both legs while keeping the bar centered over your base. Push through the front foot to return to standing. Avoid stepping so narrowly that balance becomes the main challenge, and reset completely before the next repetition.
Treat this as an overview and use a range, pace, and setup you can control.
