Exercise guide
Barbell Side Split Squat
The Barbell Side Split Squat is a wide-stance lower-body exercise performed with the bar across the upper back. You shift toward one leg while the opposite leg remains more extended. The quadriceps provide much of the effort, while the hamstrings, calves, and lower back assist with movement and stability.
Training context
Keeping the Barbell Side Split Squat controlled
The movement should travel toward the working leg rather than straight down between both feet. Stance width and foot angle determine how comfortably the hips and knees can move.
Use a lighter load while learning the side-to-side path. The bar should remain centered over the torso rather than tipping toward the working side.
Technique overview
Shift toward the working leg
Take a wide stance with the working foot angled slightly outward. Bend that knee and hip as you shift your weight to the side, keeping the opposite foot planted. Descend through a range you can control, then push through the working foot to return. Avoid allowing the knee to collapse inward or the bar to rotate across your shoulders.
Treat this as an overview and use a range, pace, and setup you can control.
