Exercise guide
Barbell Squat
The Barbell Squat is a lower-body strength exercise performed with a bar across the upper back. The quadriceps provide much of the effort, while the glutes, hamstrings, calves, and lower back help control the descent and stand. It can be progressed gradually by adding weight while keeping the setup consistent.
Training context
Why is the Barbell Squat useful?
The squat trains several lower-body muscle groups within one movement and can be adjusted through stance, depth, tempo, and load. It is commonly used as a primary strength exercise.
Squat mechanics differ between lifters. Knee travel, torso angle, and depth will depend on individual proportions and stance. The important standard is maintaining balance and control rather than forcing one identical position.
Technique overview
Start with a repeatable rack setup
Set the bar just below shoulder height and place it securely across your upper back. Step into a stable stance, brace, and lower by bending the hips and knees together. Keep pressure through the whole foot and stand without letting the bar shift. Use rack safeties and return the bar fully to the hooks after the set.
Treat this as an overview and use a range, pace, and setup you can control.
