Board Press
The Board Press is a powerlifting bench press variation in which one or more boards limit how far the bar can descend. The shortened range often emphasizes the middle or top portion of the press, including the triceps. The chest, shoulders, lats, and forearms continue to support the movement.
Training context
Setup cues for the Board Press
Board thickness determines the stopping point. More boards create a shorter range, while fewer boards allow the bar to travel closer to the torso.
The boards should be secured by a partner, band, or purpose-built attachment so they cannot shift during the repetition. Record the number and thickness of the boards when comparing sets.
Technique overview
Touch the boards without bouncing
Set your normal bench position and unrack the bar under control. Lower it to the center of the boards while keeping the wrists and elbows aligned. Make controlled contact, then press without bouncing or allowing the boards to move. Use a spotter and rack safeties appropriate for the shortened range.
Treat this as an overview and use a range, pace, and setup you can control.
