Exercise guide
Chair Squat
Despite the name Chair Squat, the source instructions describe a Smith-machine squat with the feet positioned in front of the bar. The quadriceps perform much of the work while the glutes, hamstrings, and calves assist. The fixed bar path changes the setup compared with a free barbell squat.
Training context
What movement does this exercise describe?
The bar travels vertically along machine rails while the feet remain slightly forward. This position allows the torso to stay more upright but also makes foot placement especially important.
Set the machine stops and hooks before loading heavily. The feet should be far enough forward to remain balanced without forcing the knees or hips into an uncomfortable path.
Technique overview
Keep the feet fixed beneath the machine path
Set the bar across the shoulders and step into a stable forward foot position. Lower by bending the knees and hips while keeping the torso controlled. Descend only as far as you can maintain full foot contact, then drive through the floor to stand. Recheck the hooks and safeties before every set.
Treat this as an overview and use a range, pace, and setup you can control.
