Exercise guide

Chin-Up

The Chin-Up is a bodyweight pulling exercise performed with the palms facing the body. The lats provide much of the pulling force while the biceps, forearms, and middle back assist. The underhand grip usually allows the biceps to contribute more than they do during an overhand pull-up.

Training context

Who may find Chin-Ups useful?

Chin-ups can serve as a primary vertical pull or as a bodyweight strength goal. Resistance bands or an assisted machine can reduce the load, while additional weight can increase it.

Grip width should remain comfortable at the wrists and elbows. A shoulder-width or slightly narrower position works for many lifters.

Technique overview

Pull without kicking or swinging

Hang from the bar with the palms facing you and the shoulders controlled. Pull the elbows down toward the sides as the chest rises toward the bar. Pause near the top, then lower steadily until the arms are extended through a comfortable range. Avoid using leg kicks, repeated body swing, or excessive lower-back arching.

Treat this as an overview and use a range, pace, and setup you can control.
