Exercise guide
Close-Grip Front Lat Pulldown
The Close-Grip Front Lat Pulldown is a vertical pulling exercise performed with a narrower overhand grip. The lats provide the primary pulling force while the biceps, middle back, and shoulders assist. The thigh pad keeps the body from rising as the bar is pulled downward.
Training context
Before adding the Close-Grip Lat Pulldown
Adjust the thigh pad before selecting the final load. It should hold the legs securely without making it difficult to enter or leave the machine.
A close grip on a wide pulldown bar should still allow the wrists and elbows to follow a comfortable path. The torso only needs a small backward lean.
Technique overview
Drive the elbows down toward the sides
Begin with the arms extended and the chest lifted without exaggerating the lower-back arch. Pull the bar toward the upper chest by moving the elbows down and back. Pause briefly, then allow the arms to extend slowly. Avoid rocking the torso or pulling the bar behind the neck.
Treat this as an overview and use a range, pace, and setup you can control.
