Exercise guide

Conan's Wheel

Conan's Wheel is a strongman event in which a long weighted arm is held in the crooks of the elbows and carried around a central pivot. The quadriceps drive the walk while the trunk, upper back, shoulders, arms, calves, and grip help support the implement.

Training context

What is Conan's Wheel?

The athlete lifts the free end of the apparatus and walks in a circle for distance or completed revolutions. Because the load remains in front of the body, maintaining an upright torso becomes increasingly difficult as fatigue builds.

The event requires specialized equipment and a completely clear circular path. Load and lever length can make different apparatuses difficult to compare directly.

Technique overview

Take short steps and keep breathing

Place the implement securely in the elbow creases and hold one wrist with the opposite hand. Stand before beginning the walk, then use short, quick steps around the pivot. Keep the chest lifted and breathe throughout the attempt. End the carry before the implement slips onto the forearms or the path becomes uncontrolled.

Treat this as an overview and use a range, pace, and setup you can control.
