Exercise guide
Dumbbell Thrusters
Dumbbell Thrusters combine a front-loaded squat with an overhead press. The quadriceps and glutes drive the body upward while the shoulders and triceps finish the dumbbells overhead. The movement should flow continuously from the squat into the press.
Training context
Keeping Dumbbell Thrusters controlled
The lower body should create the initial momentum for the press. Pausing after standing turns the repetition into a squat followed by a separate shoulder press.
The dumbbells should remain securely at the shoulders during the squat. Use a load that does not pull the torso forward or cause the arms to separate unevenly.
Technique overview
Drive from the squat directly into the press
Hold the dumbbells at shoulder height and squat with the feet planted. Stand forcefully and transfer that momentum into the overhead press. Finish balanced with the weights above the shoulders, then lower them back to the rack before beginning the next squat. Stop when the two phases can no longer remain connected.
Treat this as an overview and use a range, pace, and setup you can control.
