Elliptical Trainer

The Elliptical Trainer provides low-impact cardiovascular exercise through a continuous oval pedal path. The quadriceps, glutes, hamstrings, and calves help drive the pedals while resistance and incline adjust the effort. Some machines also include moving handles for upper-body involvement.

Training context

Keeping the elliptical stride controlled

Begin with a resistance that allows a smooth rhythm before increasing incline or effort. The feet should stay in contact with the pedals rather than lifting or shifting during each cycle.

Calorie and heart-rate readings on the console are estimates. Use them as general feedback rather than exact measurements.

Technique overview

Settle into the stride before increasing resistance

Step onto the pedals while holding the fixed handles and begin moving gradually. Keep the torso upright and allow the knees to track with the feet. Adjust one setting at a time and maintain a pace you can control. Reduce resistance and slow the pedals before stepping off.

Treat this as an overview and use a range, pace, and setup you can control.
