Exercise guide

Frankenstein Squat

The Frankenstein Squat is a front-squat drill performed with both arms extended straight ahead. The bar rests on the shoulder shelf without being held by the hands. This makes torso position and elbow height immediately important because the bar will roll if the rack position is lost.

Training context

Before Adding the Frankenstein Squat

The drill can help teach the bar position used in cleans and front squats. It should begin with an empty bar or very light load until the athlete can maintain the shoulder shelf throughout the squat.

The bar may sit close to the throat, but it should not restrict breathing or create painful pressure. The upper back remains tall rather than rounded forward.

Technique overview

Keep the arms and chest lifted

Place the bar across the front shoulders and extend both arms forward. Step into a stable stance and squat between the legs while keeping the chest and arms high. Descend only as far as the bar remains balanced, then stand through the full feet. Use a rack and safeties so the bar can be released safely if it rolls.

Treat this as an overview and use a range, pace, and setup you can control.
