Exercise guide
Hack Squat
The Hack Squat is a machine-based lower-body exercise performed with the back supported against an angled pad. The quadriceps provide the main effort while the glutes, hamstrings, and calves assist. The fixed machine path reduces balance demands but still requires careful foot placement.
Training context
Setup Cues for the Hack Squat
Position both feet securely on the platform before releasing the safeties. Foot height and stance width affect the available range and how the knees and hips share the work.
The source's warning against the knees passing the toes is too absolute. Natural knee travel is acceptable when the feet remain planted and the knees follow their direction.
Technique overview
Keep the back supported throughout the repetition
Set the shoulders beneath the pads, place the full feet on the platform, and release the safeties only after taking the load. Lower through a comfortable range without the hips lifting from the pad. Push the platform away to return without locking the knees aggressively. Reengage the safeties before exiting.
Treat this as an overview and use a range, pace, and setup you can control.
