Exercise guide
Hang Clean
The Hang Clean begins with the bar held around mid-thigh rather than resting on the floor. The athlete extends the hips, knees, and ankles to accelerate the bar, then moves underneath it and receives it across the front shoulders. The quadriceps, glutes, hamstrings, calves, traps, shoulders, forearms, and back all contribute.
Training context
Why Use the Hang Clean?
Starting from the hang allows the lifter to focus on the explosive portion of the clean without first pulling from the floor. It is commonly used to develop power, improve bar contact, and practice a faster turnover into the front rack.
The source instructions omit the actual turnover and catch. A Hang Clean is not complete until the elbows rotate under the bar and the weight is received securely on the shoulders.
Technique overview
Extend fully, then move under the bar
Begin with the bar close to the thighs, shoulders slightly ahead of it, and feet balanced. Extend forcefully through the hips and legs without swinging the bar away. After extension, pull under and rotate the elbows forward to receive the bar on the shoulders with bent knees. Stand fully before lowering or resetting the bar.
Treat this as an overview and use a range, pace, and setup you can control.
