Exercise guide

JM Press

The JM Press is a barbell triceps exercise that combines features of a close-grip bench press and a lying triceps extension. The elbows bend as the bar travels toward the upper chest or lower face area, then the triceps press it back to the starting position. The chest and shoulders assist.

Training context

Setup Cues for the JM Press

Use a secure bench and rack with a grip slightly narrower than a normal bench press. The wrists should remain stacked over the forearms rather than folding backward.

The movement has a short and technical bar path. Begin with a light load and use a spotter or safety arms when available.

Technique overview

Lower between a press and an extension

Unrack the bar over the upper chest with the elbows controlled. Bend the elbows and allow the bar to travel toward the face or upper chest while the upper arms move slightly. Reverse the path by extending the elbows and pressing the bar upward. Stop if the elbows or wrists lose their position.

Treat this as an overview and use a range, pace, and setup you can control.
