Lying Close-Grip Barbell Triceps Extension Behind The Head
This lying triceps extension begins with the upper arms angled overhead rather than directly above the chest. The triceps extend the elbows while the bar travels behind the head through a semicircular path.
Training context
Keeping the Behind-Head Extension Controlled
Allowing the upper arms to remain slightly behind the head can keep tension on the triceps near the top. The bench must provide enough clearance for the bar to move safely behind the head.
An EZ-style bar may be more comfortable for the wrists. Use a spotter or safety setup when handling a bar above and behind the face.
Technique overview
Keep the upper-arm angle consistent
Lie with the head near the end of the bench and position the bar over or slightly behind the head. Bend the elbows to lower the bar farther behind the bench while the upper arms remain steady. Extend the elbows to return along the same path without allowing them to flare widely.
Treat this as an overview and use a range, pace, and setup you can control.
