Exercise guide

Overhead Lat

The Overhead Lat is a partner-assisted contract-relax stretch. The working arm is positioned overhead with the elbow bent, creating tension through the lat and triceps region.

Training context

Who May Find the Overhead Lat Stretch Useful?

The drill may suit athletes who are comfortable with overhead shoulder positions and understand partner-assisted stretching. It should not be used to force a restricted or painful shoulder farther overhead.

The person being stretched must control the amount of pressure. Both partners should agree on a stop signal before beginning.

Technique overview

Use gentle resistance and gradual pressure

Sit upright with one arm overhead and the elbow bent. Press the upper arm lightly downward while the partner prevents movement. Relax fully, then allow the partner to guide the arm through a small additional range. Release slowly and repeat on the other side.

Treat this as an overview and use a range, pace, and setup you can control.
