Exercise guide
Overhead Squat
The Overhead Squat combines a squat with a wide-grip overhead barbell hold. The quadriceps, glutes, and hamstrings move the lower body while the shoulders, triceps, upper back, and trunk keep the bar balanced.
Training context
Who May Find the Overhead Squat Useful?
The exercise is commonly used in Olympic weightlifting to develop receiving-position strength, mobility, and control. It requires sufficient shoulder, ankle, hip, and thoracic mobility.
The source's floor-to-chest setup is awkward for this lift. Use a rack, blocks, or a technically sound snatch variation to place the bar overhead.
Technique overview
Keep the bar balanced over the middle of the feet
Establish a wide grip and secure overhead lockout before squatting. Bend the knees and hips while keeping the bar centered above the feet and the arms active. Descend only as far as the position remains balanced, then drive through the full feet to stand.
Treat this as an overview and use a range, pace, and setup you can control.
