Exercise guide

Seated Triceps Press

The Seated Triceps Press is an overhead dumbbell extension performed with both hands supporting one weight. The triceps straighten the elbows while the bench and trunk stabilize the upper body.

Training context

How the Seated Triceps Press Differs

Holding one dumbbell with both hands allows a heavier combined load than many single-arm versions. It also requires a secure grip around the top plate or handle.

A spotter can help place and remove a heavy dumbbell. The weight should never be passed directly over the face without clear communication.

Technique overview

Keep the upper arms steady overhead

Sit with the back supported and hold the dumbbell securely above the head. Bend the elbows to lower it behind the head through a comfortable range. Extend the elbows to return overhead without allowing the ribs to flare or the shoulders to shrug.

Treat this as an overview and use a range, pace, and setup you can control.
