Exercise guide

Side To Side Chins

Side-to-Side Chins are a pull-up variation in which the torso shifts slightly toward alternating hands. The lats, middle back, biceps, forearms, and shoulders support the pulling movement.

Training context

Keeping Side-to-Side Chins Controlled

The side shift should be small and produced near the top of a controlled pull-up. It should not become a large swing or an attempt to move the head around the bar.

A standard pull-up is the appropriate progression when equal control cannot be maintained toward both sides.

Technique overview

Pull up first, then shift slightly

Hang from a comfortable overhand grip and pull the chest toward the bar. Near the top, direct the torso slightly toward one hand without twisting aggressively. Lower under control, then repeat toward the opposite side.

Treat this as an overview and use a range, pace, and setup you can control.
