Smith Machine Close-Grip Bench Press

The Smith Machine Close-Grip Bench Press shifts more work toward the triceps while the chest and shoulders assist. The fixed bar path makes bench alignment and grip selection important.

Training context

How the Close-Grip Version Differs

A grip around shoulder width usually allows the forearms and wrists to remain better aligned than an extremely narrow grip. The elbows can stay closer to the torso without being forced against it.

Set the safety stops and test the bar path with an empty machine. Reposition the bench if the bar cannot reach the lower chest comfortably.

Technique overview

Keep the wrists stacked over the forearms

Lie with the bench secured and take a grip that keeps the wrists neutral. Lower the bar toward the lower or middle chest while the elbows travel close to the body. Press through the triceps, control the return, and engage both hooks before releasing the bar.

Treat this as an overview and use a range, pace, and setup you can control.
