Exercise guide
Smith Machine Leg Press
The Smith Machine Leg Press places the lifter beneath the guided bar with both feet pressing against it. The quadriceps provide the main knee extension while the glutes, hamstrings, and calves assist.
Training context
Understanding the Smith Leg Press
This is a nonstandard setup that places the body directly beneath the loaded bar. The machine must have reliable adjustable safeties positioned to prevent the bar from reaching the torso or face.
Foot contact on a round or smooth bar can be unstable. A purpose-built leg-press machine offers a larger platform and is generally easier to control.
Technique overview
Keep both feet centered and the safeties engaged
Set the safeties before lying beneath the bar and test the available range without added weight. Place both feet evenly, extend the hips and knees without locking them forcefully, and lower only until the pelvis remains stable. Stop immediately if either foot shifts on the bar.
Treat this as an overview and use a range, pace, and setup you can control.
