Smith Machine Squat
The Smith Machine Squat trains the quadriceps, glutes, hamstrings, calves, and lower back through a guided bar path. The machine reduces bar-balance demands but makes stance placement especially important.
Training context
Who May Find Smith Squats Useful?
Smith squats may suit users who prefer a predictable bar path or want to use the machine's hooks and safeties. The feet can often sit slightly forward of the bar depending on the machine angle and desired squat style.
Knees may travel beyond the toes when the stance, ankle mobility, and body proportions require it. The useful standard is stable foot pressure and a controlled knee path.
Technique overview
Choose a stance that matches the fixed path
Set the safeties, place the bar securely across the upper back, and unrack with both feet planted. Bend the hips and knees together while keeping the knees aligned with the feet. Descend through a controlled range, stand by pressing through the full foot, and rotate the bar fully into the hooks.
Treat this as an overview and use a range, pace, and setup you can control.
