Exercise guide

Split Clean

The Split Clean moves the bar from the floor to the shoulders and receives it with one foot forward and the other behind. The quadriceps are listed as primary, with the hips, hamstrings, calves, back, traps, shoulders, and grip supporting the lift.

Training context

How the Split Catch Changes the Clean

The pulling phases resemble other clean variations, but the receiving stance requires precise fore-and-aft foot placement. The bar still needs to settle securely on the shoulders with the elbows forward.

The split clean is an advanced and less common variation. Practice the footwork with an empty bar and work with a coach before adding meaningful load.

Technique overview

Pull vertically and establish the split quickly

Lift the bar close from the floor and accelerate through full hip and leg extension. Rotate the elbows beneath the bar while moving the feet into a stable split stance. Receive the bar on the shoulders, regain balance, then bring the feet together in controlled steps.

Treat this as an overview and use a range, pace, and setup you can control.
