Squat Jerk
The Squat Jerk uses a short dip and leg drive to send the bar overhead while the lifter moves into a full overhead squat. The quadriceps are primary, with the hips, hamstrings, calves, shoulders, and triceps assisting.
Training context
Setup Requirements for the Squat Jerk
The movement demands exceptional overhead mobility, balance, and confidence in a deep squat. A stable overhead squat and power jerk should be established first.
This is an advanced Olympic-lifting variation. Practice with light loads, bumper plates, and qualified coaching before increasing weight.
Technique overview
Drive vertically and receive in a stable overhead squat
Start with the bar on the shoulders and feet beneath the hips. Dip straight down, drive through the legs, and move the head clear as the bar rises. Shift the feet into the squat stance, lock the arms overhead, descend beneath the bar, and stand only after balance is established.
Treat this as an overview and use a range, pace, and setup you can control.
