Wide-Grip Pulldown Behind The Neck
The Wide-Grip Pulldown Behind the Neck directs a wide bar behind the head rather than toward the chest. The lats are listed as the primary muscle group, with the biceps, middle back, and shoulders assisting.
Training context
Using the Behind-the-Neck Pulldown
This variation requires substantial shoulder external rotation and may be uncomfortable or unsuitable for many lifters. Pulling the bar to the front of the upper chest usually trains the same general muscles with fewer mobility demands.
Anyone choosing this variation should use a light load, pain-free range, and enough shoulder mobility to keep the head and torso neutral. The bar should never be forced against the neck.
Technique overview
Use only a pain-free shoulder range
Secure the thighs and take a comfortable wide grip. If the shoulders can maintain the position without strain, draw the elbows down while the bar moves behind the head only to a controlled height. Keep the neck neutral and do not push the head forward to clear the bar. Stop immediately for shoulder or neck discomfort and use a front pulldown instead.
Treat this as an overview and use a range, pace, and setup you can control.
