Exercise guide
Wide Stance Barbell Squat
The Wide Stance Barbell Squat uses a stance wider than shoulder width with the bar supported across the upper back. The quadriceps provide the primary effort, while the glutes, hamstrings, calves, and lower back assist throughout the repetition.
Training context
Keeping the Wide Stance Barbell Squat Controlled
Stance width and toe angle should allow the knees to track naturally and the full feet to remain planted. Wider is not automatically better if it limits depth or creates hip or knee discomfort.
Use rack safeties and record the stance width, bar position, load, and depth. Knee travel may extend beyond the toes depending on the lifter's structure and squat style, provided balance and alignment remain controlled.
Technique overview
Let the knees track with the toes
Unrack the bar from a stable upper-back position and establish the wide stance before descending. Bend the hips and knees together while keeping pressure through the full feet. Descend only as far as the torso, knees, and pelvis remain controlled, then drive through the floor to stand. Re-rack carefully without narrowing the stance too early.
Treat this as an overview and use a range, pace, and setup you can control.
