Exercise guide
Ab Roller
The Ab Roller is a kneeling core exercise performed with an ab wheel. You roll forward while keeping your torso and hips aligned, then use your abs to return to the starting position. The shoulders help support the upper body, but the main challenge is preventing the lower back from sagging as the wheel moves away.
Training context
What is the Ab Roller exercise?
The farther the wheel travels from your knees, the harder your core must work to keep your body in a strong position. This makes the rollout easy to scale by shortening or extending the range rather than changing equipment.
The exercise is most effective when the movement stays controlled. Reaching farther is not useful if the hips drop, the lower back arches, or you cannot pull the wheel back without losing position.
Technique overview
Use only the range you can control
Kneel with both hands on the wheel and begin with it under your shoulders. Tighten your abs and glutes, then roll forward slowly while keeping your ribs and hips controlled. Stop before your lower back begins to sag. Pause briefly and pull the wheel back without throwing your hips behind you. Start with a short range and increase it gradually.
Treat this as an overview and use a range, pace, and setup you can control.
