Barbell Bench Press
The Barbell Bench Press is a horizontal pressing exercise for the chest, shoulders, and triceps. A medium grip generally keeps the forearms near vertical through the middle of the repetition. The barbell makes resistance straightforward to measure and progress over time.
Training context
Benefits of the Barbell Bench Press
The bench press allows both arms to press one shared load through a repeatable path. It can serve as a primary upper-body strength exercise or be used alongside rows and other pulling movements.
Progress depends on more than the weight on the bar. Grip width, bench position, chest touch point, and bar path should remain reasonably consistent when comparing sessions.
Technique overview
Build a stable base before unracking
Position yourself on the bench and set your grip before taking the bar from the rack. Lower it under control toward the middle or lower chest while keeping the wrists stacked over the forearms. Press the bar back up without bouncing it from the torso. Finish by guiding it fully into the rack, ideally with safeties or a spotter available.
Treat this as an overview and use a range, pace, and setup you can control.
