Exercise guide
Barbell Glute Bridge
The Barbell Glute Bridge is performed on the floor with a bar positioned across the hips. The glutes extend the hips against the load, while the hamstrings and calves assist with lower-body stability. Unlike a hip thrust, the upper back stays on the floor.
Training context
Before adding the Barbell Glute Bridge
The exercise can be used as a main glute movement or as accessory work after squats and deadlifts. The floor limits the bottom range, which usually makes the setup simpler than a bench-supported hip thrust.
Use a bar pad or folded mat to reduce pressure across the hips. Make sure the plates provide enough space to roll the bar into position without trapping the legs.
Technique overview
Drive the hips through the bar
Lie on the floor with the padded bar centered across your hips and feet planted. Brace the torso, drive through the feet, and raise the hips without allowing the bar to roll. Pause at the highest position you can reach without arching the lower back, then lower under control. Reset if the feet slide or the bar shifts.
Treat this as an overview and use a range, pace, and setup you can control.
