Exercise guide
Barbell Shrug
The Barbell Shrug is a standing exercise for the traps. The bar hangs in front of the thighs while the shoulders move upward and return. The arms remain long, allowing the exercise to focus on elevation of the shoulder girdle rather than an elbow pull.
Training context
Keeping the Barbell Shrug controlled
The shrug has a compact range, so each repetition should begin and end deliberately. A heavier bar is not useful if the knees, hips, or arms must create most of the movement.
Grip may become a limiting factor before the traps are fatigued. Straps can change that limitation, so note whether they were used when comparing sessions.
Technique overview
Raise the shoulders without curling the bar
Stand tall with the bar in front of your thighs and your arms extended. Lift the shoulders upward, pause briefly, and lower them under control. Keep the elbows straight and avoid rolling the shoulders in large circles. Reduce the weight if you need to bounce through the knees or lean backward to start each repetition.
Treat this as an overview and use a range, pace, and setup you can control.
