Barbell Shrug Behind The Back
The Behind-the-Back Barbell Shrug places the bar behind the thighs while the shoulders raise and lower. The traps perform the main movement, while the forearms and middle back help hold and stabilize the bar. The rear bar position may feel more restrictive than a standard front-loaded shrug.
Training context
Using Behind-the-Back Barbell Shrugs
This variation can be used as an alternative to standard shrugs when the rear bar position feels comfortable. It does not automatically provide a better trap contraction, so the choice should depend on control and shoulder comfort.
The bar may contact the glutes or thighs as it moves. Use a grip width and body position that allow it to travel without forcing the shoulders backward.
Technique overview
Keep the arms long
Stand tall with the bar held behind your thighs and your palms facing backward. Raise the shoulders upward without bending the elbows, pause briefly, and lower slowly. Avoid leaning forward, pushing the hips away from the bar, or forcing the shoulders into a range that feels restricted.
Treat this as an overview and use a range, pace, and setup you can control.
