Carioca Quick Step
The Carioca Quick Step is a lateral footwork drill that combines a crossover step with a knee drive. The adductors, abductors, glutes, calves, hamstrings, quadriceps, and abdominals all help coordinate the movement. The drill emphasizes rhythm and direction rather than maximum jumping height.
Training context
What makes the Carioca Quick Step different?
The feet cross as the body travels sideways, but the chest and eyes remain facing forward. This requires more coordination than a simple lateral shuffle.
The pattern should be learned slowly before speed is added. Use a clear floor area and perform the drill in both directions.
Technique overview
Learn the crossover before increasing speed
Begin in an athletic stance and step one foot behind the other as you travel sideways. Drive the knee upward and coordinate the opposite arm without turning the torso. Keep the feet light and the steps narrow enough to remain balanced. Slow down when the feet begin to cross unpredictably.
Treat this as an overview and use a range, pace, and setup you can control.
