Decline Barbell Bench Press
The Decline Barbell Bench Press is performed with the torso angled downward and the legs secured beneath the bench pads. The chest provides the primary pressing force while the shoulders and triceps assist. The bar generally touches lower on the chest than it does during a flat bench press.
Training context
Why use the Decline Barbell Bench Press?
The decline angle changes the pressing path and may feel more comfortable for some lifters than flat or incline pressing. It also allows the lower body to remain fixed beneath the bench supports.
Unracking and reracking can be difficult because of the body angle. A spotter is especially useful for handing off the bar and confirming that it has returned securely to the hooks.
Technique overview
Secure the legs before unracking
Lock the legs beneath the pads and establish the shoulder position before taking the bar. Lower toward the lower chest with the forearms close to vertical. Press back over the shoulders without bouncing from the torso. Confirm the bar is fully secured before releasing your grip or sitting up.
Treat this as an overview and use a range, pace, and setup you can control.
