Exercise guide
Decline Smith Press
The Decline Smith Press uses a decline bench beneath a Smith machine. The chest provides the primary pressing force while the shoulders and triceps assist. The fixed rails guide the bar, making bench placement especially important.
Training context
Before adding the Decline Smith Press
The bench must be centered so the bar reaches the lower chest without forcing the shoulders or wrists into an awkward position. Test the path with an unloaded bar before adding weight.
Set the safety stops and confirm that the hooks can be reached from the decline position. The bench should not slide when the bar is pressed.
Technique overview
Align the bench with the fixed bar path
Secure the decline bench and test where the bar meets the torso. Unhook the bar with the arms nearly extended, lower under control, and press along the rails. Avoid shifting the body to meet a poorly aligned bar. Rotate the bar fully into the hooks before releasing your grip.
Treat this as an overview and use a range, pace, and setup you can control.
