Exercise guide
Deficit Deadlift
The Deficit Deadlift is performed while standing on a low platform, increasing the distance between the hands and the bar. This creates a longer starting range than a standard deadlift. The back, quadriceps, glutes, hamstrings, traps, forearms, and grip all contribute.
Training context
Who may find the Deficit Deadlift useful?
The exercise may suit experienced deadlifters who want additional practice and strength from the floor. It is not necessary for lifters who cannot maintain a strong starting position through the added range.
Most deficits are modest. A platform that is too high can change the movement significantly and force the back or hips into a poor position.
Technique overview
Use only a deficit you can control
Stand on a stable nonslip platform and center the bar over the feet. Set the grip and torso before pushing through the floor. Keep the bar close as it passes the platform and legs, then finish the hips and knees together. Lower under control without stepping near the platform edge.
Treat this as an overview and use a range, pace, and setup you can control.
