Dumbbell Bench Press with Neutral Grip
The Neutral-Grip Dumbbell Bench Press is performed with the palms facing each other throughout the movement. The chest remains the primary muscle focus while the triceps and shoulders assist. The neutral hand position usually keeps the elbows closer to the torso than a traditional palms-forward press.
Training context
How does the neutral grip differ?
Turning the palms inward changes the shoulder and elbow path. Some lifters find this position more comfortable because the upper arms do not flare as widely.
The dumbbells can remain slightly apart rather than being pressed together. The goal is to maintain the neutral grip without allowing the wrists to bend backward.
Technique overview
Keep the palms facing each other
Set the shoulders against the bench and begin with the dumbbells above the chest. Lower with the elbows traveling on a comfortable path beside the torso. Pause when the weights reach the controlled bottom position, then press upward. Maintain the same hand angle from the first repetition to the last.
Treat this as an overview and use a range, pace, and setup you can control.
