Hyperextensions With No Hyperextension Bench
This variation attempts to reproduce a Back Extension using the edge of a flat bench instead of a dedicated hyperextension station. The lower back, glutes, and hamstrings raise the torso while another person holds the legs securely.
Training context
What Is the Flat-Bench Back Extension?
The hips hang beyond the edge of the bench so the torso can lower toward the floor. Because the bench is lower and lacks dedicated ankle pads, the available range and security differ considerably from a hyperextension machine.
The exercise depends on a reliable partner and a bench that cannot tip or slide. A dedicated machine is preferable when available. External weight should not be added until the bodyweight setup is unquestionably secure.
Technique overview
Secure the legs before moving beyond the bench
Position the hips near the bench edge only after the partner has secured both legs. Lower the torso slowly through a range that keeps the spine controlled and the bench stable. Raise until the torso aligns with the legs without arching above them. Stop immediately if the partner's grip or bench position changes.
Treat this as an overview and use a range, pace, and setup you can control.
