Keg Load
The Keg Load is a full-body strongman event that combines an awkward-object pickup, carry, and platform load. The legs and hips raise and propel the keg while the arms, back, shoulders, grip, and trunk keep it secured. Although lower back is listed as primary, the exercise should not be treated as lower-back isolation work.
Training context
How the Keg Load Differs
A keg does not provide the balanced handles or predictable center of mass of a barbell. Its shape may shift during the pickup and carry, requiring the athlete to keep the load close and adjust the grip.
Use an empty or lightly loaded practice keg before heavier event work. The route and loading platform must remain stable and free of obstacles.
Technique overview
Secure the keg before beginning the carry
Tilt the keg and establish a firm grip around its edge or handles. Use the legs and hips to lift it into the lap or chest, then stand with the implement held close. Take controlled steps toward the platform and extend through the lower body to load it. Do not chase a slipping keg or continue when the grip is failing.
Treat this as an overview and use a range, pace, and setup you can control.
