Pushups (Close and Wide Hand Positions)
Close and Wide Push-Ups use the same basic bodyweight press with different hand placements. A closer position generally increases the triceps demand, while a moderately wider position changes the chest and shoulder angle.
Training context
Understanding Close and Wide Push-Ups
The two hand positions should be treated as separate variations rather than changed randomly within a set. Each width creates a different elbow path and may require a different comfortable depth.
Neither position needs to be extreme. Hands that are too close may irritate the wrists, while an excessively wide position may limit range and stress the shoulders.
Technique overview
Choose the hand width before beginning the set
Set the hands either slightly inside or moderately outside shoulder width. Maintain a straight body position, lower through a comfortable range, and press evenly through both palms. Keep the chosen hand placement unchanged until the set is complete.
Treat this as an overview and use a range, pace, and setup you can control.
