Reverse Grip Bent-Over Rows

The Reverse-Grip Bent-Over Row uses a palms-up barbell grip to train the middle back and lats, with the biceps and shoulders assisting. The underhand position often encourages the elbows to remain closer to the torso.

Training context

Who May Find Reverse-Grip Rows Useful?

The variation may suit lifters who prefer an underhand grip or want more elbow-flexor involvement during rows. It may be uncomfortable for some wrists, elbows, or biceps tendons.

The torso does not need to be exactly parallel to the floor. Use a hinge angle that can remain stable throughout the set.

Technique overview

Row toward the lower ribs without standing up

Take a comfortable palms-up grip and hinge with the knees softly bent. Pull the bar toward the lower ribs or upper abdomen while keeping the torso angle steady. Pause without rolling the shoulders forward, then lower until the arms extend under control.

Treat this as an overview and use a range, pace, and setup you can control.
