Exercise guide
Smith Machine Decline Press
The Smith Machine Decline Press trains the chest from a declined bench angle, with the shoulders and triceps assisting. The guided bar path requires the bench to be positioned precisely beneath the machine.
Training context
Before Adding the Smith Decline Press
Use a decline bench with a secure leg restraint and make sure it cannot slide. Set the machine safeties and confirm that both hooks can be reached from the pressing position.
The bar should meet the lower chest through a comfortable path. A spotter is useful because getting out of a decline bench can be slower after a difficult set.
Technique overview
Keep the body anchored to the decline bench
Secure the legs, retract the shoulder blades, and unhook the bar over the chest. Lower it under control to a comfortable touch point, then press upward without lifting the shoulders or shifting on the bench. Rotate the bar fully into the hooks before sitting up.
Treat this as an overview and use a range, pace, and setup you can control.
