Smith Machine Hang Power Clean
The Smith Machine Hang Power Clean attempts to combine an explosive hip extension with a front-rack catch on a guided bar. The hamstrings, glutes, quadriceps, traps, shoulders, and lower back all contribute.
Training context
Understanding the Fixed-Path Variation
A conventional clean allows the bar and lifter to adjust around one another. The Smith machine restricts that horizontal movement and may make the turnover or catch uncomfortable.
Use very light resistance and confirm that the machine design permits the wrists and elbows to rotate safely. Standard hang-clean drills are generally more transferable to Olympic lifting.
Technique overview
Prioritize a controlled turnover over load
Begin from a hinged hang position with the arms straight and bar close to the thighs. Extend the hips and knees, then move beneath the bar only if the fixed track allows a comfortable rack position. Receive it with bent knees, stand under control, and rerack before the path or timing becomes forced.
Treat this as an overview and use a range, pace, and setup you can control.
