Stiff-Legged Dumbbell Deadlift
The Stiff-Legged Dumbbell Deadlift trains the hamstrings through a hip hinge while allowing each hand to hold an independent load. The glutes assist with hip extension, and the lower back helps maintain a stable torso.
Training context
Why the Stiff-Legged Dumbbell Deadlift Can Be Useful
Dumbbells allow the hands to travel naturally beside or slightly in front of the legs, which can make the setup more accessible than a fixed barbell grip. They also make it easy to begin with a light load while learning to move through the hips.
The useful range depends on hamstring mobility and torso control. Compare workouts using a similar knee position and depth rather than lowering the dumbbells farther at the expense of spinal position.
Technique overview
Send the hips back as the dumbbells descend
Stand with the dumbbells close to the thighs and keep a soft bend in the knees. Push the hips backward while lowering the weights close to the legs. Stop when the hamstrings are loaded and the torso can still remain controlled. Extend the hips to stand, avoiding a backward lean or an abrupt finish at the top.
Treat this as an overview and use a range, pace, and setup you can control.
