Exercise guide
Vertical Swing
The Vertical Swing is an explosive movement that uses a two-hand dumbbell swing and a vertical jump. The hamstrings provide the primary hip-hinge emphasis, while the glutes, quadriceps, and shoulders assist with propulsion and control.
Training context
Why the Vertical Swing Can Be Useful
The exercise combines a loaded swing, overhead path, and landing, making it substantially more complex than a standard dumbbell swing. The weight must remain light enough for the implement and body to stay controlled throughout the entire repetition.
Use a clear training area with adequate overhead space. Stop when the dumbbell begins pulling the arms off course or the landing becomes heavy or unstable.
Technique overview
Control the dumbbell before and after the jump
Hold one dumbbell securely with both hands and hinge to guide it between the legs. Extend the hips and knees forcefully to drive upward while keeping the weight on a predictable path. Land with soft knees and regain balance before allowing the dumbbell to swing into the next repetition. Avoid releasing the weight or forcing it behind the head.
Treat this as an overview and use a range, pace, and setup you can control.
