Exercise guide
Alternating Cable Shoulder Press
The Alternating Cable Shoulder Press is an overhead pressing exercise performed with two low cable pulleys. One arm presses while the other remains at shoulder height, creating continuous tension throughout the set. The shoulders perform most of the work while the triceps assist in extending the arm.
Training context
Before adding the Alternating Cable Shoulder Press
The exercise can be used as a primary shoulder movement or as a controlled accessory press after heavier work. Cables provide tension through both the upward press and the return, so the resistance may feel different from dumbbells.
Place both pulleys at the same height and stand far enough forward that the cables can travel overhead without rubbing against your arms. Use a stance that allows you to remain upright without leaning backward.
Technique overview
Press without shifting the torso
Hold both handles at shoulder height with the palms facing forward. Brace your torso and press one handle directly overhead while keeping the other side steady. Lower the handle under control, then repeat with the opposite arm. Avoid leaning sideways, arching the lower back, or letting the cable pull the elbow behind you.
Treat this as an overview and use a range, pace, and setup you can control.
